Introduction:

This report delves into a comprehensive analysis of NEAR protocol, juxtaposing it against two other prominent blockchain networks over the past two years. Covering the critical dimensions of governance voting and staking metrics, we aim to decode the levels of participation in each blockchain's governance activities. By scrutinizing the key indices such as the total number of votes, percentage of voting power, distribution of stakers, staking ratio, and rewards, we strive to provide a granular understanding of the user and investor involvement. The objective is not merely to distinguish these blockchains based on the numbers but to unmask their strengths, weaknesses, and overall operational efficiency in relation to community participation. This comparative study will serve as an instrumental tool in understanding the underlying dynamics of blockchain governance and staking, and their impact on the overall performance and longevity of these platforms.

Methodology:

In this dashboard I am going to start by looking at overall governance and staking activity between Near, Cosmos, and Terra over the last two years. Next I am going to look at each of these blockchains 1 by 1 and dive into more specifc metrics for governance and staking for each. For this I will be looking for vote and submit proposal tables where possible for governacne and staking tables where possible for staking. If these are not present we will be looking towards msgs and events table to find governacne and staking activity. I hope you enjoy!

What is NEAR?

NEAR Protocol is a software that aims to incentivize a network of computers to operate a platform for developers to create and launch decentralized applications. Central to NEAR Protocol’s design is the concept of sharding, a process that aims to split the network’s infrastructure into several segments in order for computers, also known as nodes, to only have to handle a fraction of the network’s transactions. By distributing segments of the blockchain, rather than the complete blockchain across network participants, sharding is expected to create a more efficient way to retrieve network data and scale the platform.

What is Cosmos?

The Cosmos blockchain was developed to facilitate communication between distributed ledgers without relying on a centralized server. The Cosmos white paper was published in 2016, and the network was soon regarded as the Internet of blockchains by its founders who wanted to create an interoperable platform of open-source blockchains that could streamline transactions between them. Since the inception of blockchain, interoperability has been a challenging task for developers.

What is Terra?

Terra 2.0 (LUNA) is the newest iteration of cryptocurrency on the Terra blockchain. In May 2022, the Terra blockchain experienced a hard fork prompted by founder Do Kwon and voted on by the community. This created the new Terra 2.0, with a new cryptocurrency, dubbed LUNA or LUNA2, while the original blockchain and coin took on the moniker LUNA Classic or LUNC.
